Controversial Refereeing Decisions in the King’s Cup Final

The Copa del Rey final between Barcelona and Real Madrid witnessed significant refereeing controversy, following intriguing interventions from the video assistant referee in the critical minutes before extra time.

In the 90 + 4 minute, Barcelona player Ferran Torres was clearly fouled by Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger inside the penalty area.

Despite the clarity of the incident, referee De Burgos did not award anything, nor did he receive a warning from the video referee, which angered Barcelona fans. Refereeing analyst César Barinchea Montero confirmed that the incident was a very clear penalty for Ferran Torres.

In the 90 + 6 minute, referee De Burgos awarded a penalty to Raphinha after a collision with Raúl Asensio, but the video referee asked De Burgos to review the incident.

After the review, De Burgos decided to cancel the penalty, considering the incident as simulation by Raphinha, and issued a yellow card to him. According to Barinchea Montero, the VAR’s decision to cancel the penalty was correct this time.

The final minutes of regular time were filled with significant tension, amidst protests from Barcelona players, leading the match to proceed to extra time.
