Head of the Referees Committee Decides the Fate of the Clasico

Luis Medina Cantalejo, the head of the Technical Committee of Referees in Spain, spoke about the ongoing controversy ahead of the Copa del Rey final between Real Madrid and Barcelona on Saturday evening.

Real Madrid has requested a change in the refereeing team for the clasico, following a press conference held by the main referee and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) ahead of the final.

Referee De Burgos broke down in tears during the press conference due to the criticism referees have been facing, in addition to reports published by Real Madrid’s channel against referees and officiating, while VAR referee Gonzalez Fuertes stated in an aggressive manner that they would take further legal action against Real Madrid.

Cantalejo stated in press remarks: “The Copa del Rey final is a celebration of Spanish football, and it has been in preparation for two months; the match will take place as scheduled.”

He added: “I call for calm; we are here for the match to be played.”

The Technical Committee of Referees does not consider changing the refereeing team, while all indications suggest that Real Madrid will not withdraw from the final, and that what the royal club is doing is merely pressure against the referees and officiating once again.
