Dortmund Considers Reuniting with Hummels for Club World Cup Participation

Borussia Dortmund is considering the possibility of re-signing their former defender Mats Hummels to participate in the 2025 Club World Cup, despite the player’s recent announcement of his retirement.

Hummels is currently playing with AS Roma in Italy, and he stated earlier this month that he would end his professional career at the end of this season. However, according to the German newspaper “Bild”, Dortmund is contemplating a temporary return for the veteran defender to compensate for the absence of Nico Schlotterbeck, who is facing a long-term injury.

It is worth noting that Hummels wore the Dortmund jersey during two periods: the first from 2008 to 2016, and the second from 2019 to 2024, before his contract ended without renewal.

The regulations for the Club World Cup, which will take place this year in the United States during June and July, allow participating teams to register new players during an exceptional transfer window from June 1 to 10.

Borussia Dortmund is set to compete in the tournament within Group F, alongside Brazilian team Fluminense, South Korean team Ulsan Hyundai, and South African team Mamelodi Sundowns.
