Sudden Change in the Champions League System Next Season

A Spanish media report stated that the European Football Association “UEFA” has decided to implement some changes to the Champions League system starting from the 2025/2026 season.

The Spanish network “COPE” mentioned that the knockout matches of the Champions League next season will not go to extra time in case of a tie over two legs, but rather the qualifying team will be determined directly through penalty kicks.

The source added that the teams that finish the first round among the top 8 in the standings will play the second leg at home in the quarter-finals and semi-finals.

The source indicated that teams from the same country will not face each other before the quarter-final stage of the competition.

It is worth mentioning that the current season saw the adoption of the new Champions League system with 36 teams in a league format, where the teams finishing in positions 1-8 qualified directly to the round of 16, while those finishing in positions 9-24 played home-and-away matches to qualify 8 more teams to the round of 16.
