Controversial Referee Decision in Al-Qadisiyah vs Al-Raed Match in King’s Cup

The match between Al-Qadisiyah and Al-Raed in the semi-finals of the King Abdulaziz Cup witnessed considerable controversy surrounding the Swiss referee Urs Schneider’s decision not to award a penalty to Al-Qadisiyah, which sparked widespread reactions in the sports community.

The match, held yesterday (Wednesday), ended with Al-Qadisiyah winning 1-0 thanks to a goal from Aubameyang, securing their place in the final against Al-Ittihad. However, the referee’s decision in the 71st minute drew significant attention, as many called for a penalty to be awarded to Al-Qadisiyah after a handball by Al-Raed defender Gonzalez.

In a special statement to the sports newspaper, Egyptian referee analyst Mohamed Kamal Risha expressed his dissatisfaction with the non-award of the penalty. He explained that Gonzalez’s hand was in an unnatural position after he moved it to touch the ball. He added that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) should have reviewed the incident, which did not occur.

On the other hand, Risha supported Schneider’s decision regarding the challenge by Al-Raed’s player Mohammed Al-Dosari on Nacho Fernandez, where only a yellow card was shown. Risha considered the challenge reckless but not to the extent of excessive violence.

Despite the penalty error, Risha praised the overall management of the match by the Swiss referee, noting that most of his decisions were correct and professional.

Regardless of the refereeing controversy, Al-Qadisiyah advanced to the final of the King Abdulaziz Cup after their 1-0 victory, set to face Al-Ittihad in a decisive encounter that fans eagerly await.
