A Clause in Nunez’s Contract Threatens His Participation with Liverpool

Portuguese media reports have revealed that English club Liverpool may avoid fielding their striker Darwin Nunez as a starter in the remaining matches of the Premier League this season, due to a financial clause in his contract with his former club Benfica.

According to what was published by the Portuguese newspaper “A Bola”, Liverpool would be obliged to pay €5 million, approximately £4.3 million, to Benfica if Nunez starts in 50 Premier League matches, a milestone that has not yet been reached, as the player has started only 49 matches since his arrival in the summer of 2022.

Nunez, who is 25 years old, has scored 25 goals and assisted 16 others in 90 matches played in the Premier League with Liverpool, but he has not managed to establish himself permanently in the starting lineup, whether under former coach Jurgen Klopp or current coach Arne Slot.

With only 5 matches remaining in the season, fielding Nunez as a starter once will activate the financial clause, which may lead the coaching staff to consider keeping him out of the starting formation to avoid paying the amount.

It is worth mentioning that Nunez has recently been linked with a departure from Liverpool during the summer transfer window, amid reports that the club is dissatisfied with his inconsistent performance.
